SPECIAL TOPICS
1) Special Topic "Unlocking the Potential of Actinobacteria: An Insight on the Drug Discovery Research"
Special Topic Editor: Dr Tan Loh Teng-Hern
Deadline for manuscript submissions: 30 November 2023
Special Topic Summary: This special topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current research on the potential of actinobacteria as a source of new drugs. We invite submissions of all articles format that focus on the isolation, characterization, and bioactivity of secondary metabolites and compounds produced by actinobacteria.
We are particularly interested in papers that address the following topics (but not limited to):
- Isolation and characterization of actinobacteria from various environments
- Identification and characterization of secondary metabolites produced by actinobacteria
- Bioactivity of actinobacterial secondary metabolites against pathogens and cancer cell lines
- Bioprospecting strategies for identifying new actinobacterial strains and secondary metabolites
- Synthetic biology approaches for the production and modification of actinobacterial secondary metabolites
- Challenges and future directions in the field of actinobacteria and drug discovery.
This special topic aims to update the field's current state and identify gaps in knowledge where further research is needed. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100-200 words) can be emailed to the Special Topic Editors to express interest in the submission. We look forward to receiving your submission soon!
The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open-access journal is USD 350. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English.
2) Special Topic "The Role of Gut Microbiome in Next-Generation Precision Medicine: Biomarkers Discovery and Microbiome-Based Therapeutics"
Special Topic Editor: Dr Jodi Law Woan-Fei
Deadline for manuscript submissions: 30 November 2023
Special Topic Summary: This special topic aims to offer advancing knowledge on research on the gut microbiome's relationship with disease development and therapeutic opportunities. The technological advancement in the -omics era has enabled researchers to explore the association of gut microbiome composition and functions in health and diseases. Furthermore, understanding the gut microbiome allows the identification of potential microbial biomarkers for precision medicine. Upon establishing the disease associations, it is crucial to develop personalized methods to modify the gut microbiome to treat different diseases, including personalized diet or probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, genetically engineered probiotics, and so on.
We are particularly interested in papers that address the following topics (but not limited to):
- Gut microbiome profiling in human diseases & functional profiling of gut microbiome
- Identification of potential gut microbiota as biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis
- Next-generation probiotics & genetically engineered probiotics
- Fecal microbiota transplantation
- Diet and nutrition in association with the gut microbiome
This special topic aims to update the field's current state and identify gaps in knowledge where further research is needed. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100-200 words) can be emailed to the Special Topic Editors to express interest in the submission. We look forward to receiving your submission soon!

3) Special Topic "Global Transmission of Multidrug-Resistant Pathogens: Surveillance, Molecular Pathogenesis, Host Responses, and Disease Control Strategies"
Special Topic Editor: Prof Ts Dr Lee Learn-Han
Deadline for manuscript submissions: 31 October 2023
Special Topic Summary:
This special topic aims to highlight the recent discoveries of multidrug-resistant pathogens with relevant importance to public health and the development of disease control strategies. World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized multidrug-resistant pathogens as one of the most challenging threats to global public health. This growing issue has significantly constrained the healthcare system, increased therapy costs and mortality rates, and caused severe economic losses worldwide. The primary cause of MDR is the extensive use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections in hospitals, agriculture, or aquaculture settings. Hence, understanding MDR's development and progress is crucial in mitigating and managing these pathogens.
We are particularly interested in papers that address the following topics (but not limited to):
- Detection, epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, risk assessment, and surveillance of MDR pathogens
- Unraveling the antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in the pathogens
- Interactions of MDR pathogens and host gut health
- Emerging diagnostic strategies and alternative approaches to detect and control antibiotic resistance
- Application of bacteriophages and their antimicrobial therapeutic properties
- Application of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics as an alternative approach to antibiotics and control the spread of MDR
- Effectiveness of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics to host gut microbiota to eliminate MDR infections
This special topic aims to update the field's current state and identify gaps in knowledge where further research is needed. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100-200 words) can be emailed to the Special Topic Editors to express interest in the submission. We look forward to receiving your submission soon!
